After a short business meeting we will have a special demonstration by Clark Mitchell.
According to Pence Galleries, Clark Mitchell is “considered one of California’s finest and most accomplished pastel painters”. His paintings have won awards from the Pastel Society of the West Coast and the Pastel Society of America. He has been featured in past and recent publications American Artist, Southwest Art, and the Pastel Journal. He has exhibited in many Plein Air Invitationals in Carmel, Sonoma and Laguna Beach. His work is represented by several galleries including John Pence Gallery in San Francisco and he has also shown at the The Haggin Museum, Stockton, and the California Museum of Art, Santa Rosa, CA.

Signature Workshop Series No. 1 "Making Pastels"
Back by popular demand we are offering this exciting workshop for anyone who missed it before or who wants to take it again. This is the 1st workshop in the New SPS Signature Workshop Series for 2012.
Every participant should come home with about 50 handmade pastel sticks in your own custom colors!
SIGN UP before January 31st so we know how much white to order! The cost is just $30 for returning students or $40 for new students. Make check payable to Thaleia’s Fine Arts and mail to 4880 Kingvale Road, El Dorado, CA 95623. Class being led by Connie Randmaa &/or Thaleia.
Location: We’re looking for a location in the Shingle Springs vicinity (below snow line) if you know of a place; otherwise it will be at Thaleia’s studio in El Dorado.
What to bring: Each student will be provided with your own supply of base white pastel & a selection of base colors to mix your own custom colors. Students should bring lots of latex type gloves, a roll of paper towels & a shallow box to carry your wet pastels home in (such as a plastic food container, baking pan, shoe box, or old pastel box). Also bring all of your old crumbles of pastel (if you have some) to make some awesome grey’s for your collection! We’ll have a Pot Luck Lunch so bring a favorite dish to share.

Signature Workshop No. 2 "Making Sanded Surfaced"
Our second workshop of the 2012 SPS Signature Workshop series covers covers various supports & materials used to make sanded pastel surfaces. Each student will be provided with all the materials to make pastel boards in a variety of colors and textures. All are encouraged to bring 3-6 pieces of mat board cut to sizes (up to 9x12) to add to your take-home collection. Students should bring a soft inexpensive flat paint brush betweeen 3/4 to 1.5 inches, your luncy and something to drink. Wear old clothes and shoes because you are sure to get some materials on yourself. Students will leave with a variety of new pastel surfaces and learn how sanded pastel surfaces are made.
Cost: $30 for SPS members, $40 for non-members.

General Meeting
Thaleia Georgiades, award winning SPS Signature Member and art teacher, will critique member’s paintings during our general membership meeting. Members are invited to bring up to 3 paintings to be critiqued. Thaleia has a degree in art and education, is a popular pastel instructor, and loves to teach. This will be a great opportunity for members to have their work evaluated before the SPS Spring Membership Show planned for mid April.
This meeting will also include an Art Swap, giving members the opportunity to sell or swap art equipment they aren’t using, and making it available to someone who can appreciate it! (Note: Please price your items, and be responsible for taking them home if they do not find a new owner by the time the meeting ends!)

General Meeting to Feature Portrait Demo

After a brief business meeting Galt artist, Gerald Boyd, will demonstrate portrait painting. Boyd, an award winning artist and popular demonstrator, has been designated “Distinguished Pastelist” by the Pastel Society of the West Coast, and is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America, and the Society of Western Artists. “Although I've explored a wide variety of subject matter, my paintings seem to inevitably come back to the human experience. I enjoy doing portraits, figures, and character studies and I find that even a landscape seems more alive if there are people within the composition.” His work has been recognized with numerous awards including a Best of Show in the Pastel Society of the West Coast’s Pastels USA National Exhibition in 2006 for “The Tales He Could Tell” shown here.
